'Ukraine Will Be Eliminated' John Mearsheimer and Putin Advisor Discuss US-Russia Relations
Embed
- Published on Apr 8, 2025
- After two-months in office - President US Donald Trump has ripped up the rule book on international diplomacy and signaled the end of the post-Cold War security system.
Up for debate on Counterpoints - with me, Melinda Nucifora - how will a recalibrated US-Russia relationship reshape the world order?
For much of the Biden administration...the US prided itself on leading the diplomatic isolation of Moscow. Enter the self-proclaimed ultimate deal-maker Donald Trump.
After more than a thousand days of war, the White House has gone from viewing Vladimir Putin as an potential war criminal to a trusted counterpart.
The tone in Russia has changed too. As ceasefire talks continue, the refrain “nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine” echoes time and time again.
But as US backing appears to waver, it’s uncertain if Europe is united, or strong enough, to fill that power void.
The expert panel will discuss:
How historically significant is this apparent realignment?
Is Trump’s move away from Europe the beginning of the end for the NATO alliance?
And if this rapprochement is - in part - a way to split Russia and China?
Show guests:
Sergey Karaganov - Russian strategist, Honorary Chairman of the Center for Council for Foreign and Defense Policy and adviser to President Vladimir Putin.
Prof John Mearsheimer - American political scientist and international relations scholar from the University of Chicago

How come she is regularly interrupting Sergey Karaganov???
This disrespect towards Russian is so engraved in Western's mind that it is mind-blowing and frightening! With such behaviour, we all Westeners are gonna crash down until our hubris is so shattered that we will be one of these past civilisations. We seem unable to take any other path, incredibly dumb.
To be fair, she interrupted Mearsheimer just about the same.
Exactly my observation, too. She is completely biased and not a professional journalist but a presstitute working for her employers!!!
@@tonig2757 You want a bet...go and listen again, she interrupted Mearsheimer once or twice and Karaganov almost on every exchange!!! Not to mention she threw at him that Russia attacked Ukraine and did not give him a chance to reply!
@@endivjakdivjak6451 Russia did attack Ukraine. They had their reasons.

about Ukraine, here is his quote:
- We don't care how many Ukrainians die. How many women, children, civilians die. It's like an important football match that we are watching and we want to win!
- Russia did not plan an invasion. Putin was forced to attack to prevent the Ukronazis from attacking Donbass.
I feel incredibly sad, when Sergei Alexandrowitsch says that the Russian journey with Europe is over. I am German and I always felt much more connected to Russians than to Americans. We Europeans should be ashamed of our attitude towards the Russians, particularly the Germans.
Я извиняюсь за то, что моя страна делает с вашей страной снова, Александр
I agree with the comments about how inept and abrasive this female reporter is. Her behavior is horrible. The two professors offer incredible insights.
Is not it " feminism" at highest ☝️?
Yes she is interapting to much , but I think, she has limited time for program and she wants many important question to be answered, but professors could talk long time about any questions because they have knowledge.

That lady . . . ANNOYING. She introduced TWO erudits, historians, professors - to discuss. And than she cuts into Mr. Karaganov words. Mr. Karaganov should stop, wait longer time - and, if prompted, ask nicely: CAN I CONTINUE, OR YOU, LADY, WANT TO CONTINUE _YOUR_ PRESENTATION? I am interested in understanding the discussion - and is an OBSTACLE And rude, that is
TY based on your comment I wont waste my time watching this....will just be annoying!
@@CasualEnglishWithPatrick Actually, the lady only intereputed Prof Karaganov just once and it wasn't as bad as the op made it out to be. A little annoying but very short and she allowed him to continue. The Op commonet is an exaggeration and the discussion between the two Profs was good, so you should go and watch the video rather than relying on a single comment with little merit.
@y0jimbb0ttrouble98 thanks....it is easy to see her as akin to Piers Morgan ... both of the gentlemen were a pleasure to listen to.
I am absolutely with you in what the interviewing women is concerned: first of all,her way to talk and her voice are obnoxious and second, she is totally respectless towards the Russian politician ,who is a close collaborator to the Russian president, interrupting him without even letting him express the answer to the question she asked him! Apparently, she is not only unprofessional but also extremely uneducated! People like that have nothing to do at this level of interviews!!!
Just saying!
He can't speak English, fuck him.
The principle of "good neighborliness" (do not be friends against your neighbors, because these are your neighbors who will not disappear anywhere) has not been canceled. We Russians respect this principle. Ukrainians are like children, they don't understand adult principles. Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania behave the same way, and then they will whine and cry. Therefore, we will be friends with China. The Chinese did not abandon us during the sanctions. Such an act is worthy of respect. The actions of Europeans all over the world are not seen as handshaking. There is no respect for the Europeans, they have completely compromised themselves and shown their true colors.
Melinda Nucifora was EXTREMELY "RUDE" to guest Sergey Karaganov. She repeatedly INTERRUPTED HIM as he was expressing his opinions !!! She was DRIVING ME CRAZY !!!! She needs to be SCHOOLED on proper etiquette !!!!

Why the rude interupting of prof. Karaganov. It's like a bad Western MSM interviewer cutting what they don't want to hear and pushing their own narrative. Really bad interviewer! Constantly interrupting and mishearing what is said. Karaganov says "eliminate as a spearhead for NATO attacks..." and she repeats "eliminate Ukraine?". She could work for the BBC.

This is a horrible video. The host is like a typical BBC interviewer with a warped mind and a loud voice.
She seemed to be asking pointed questions to provoke responses. It’s highly dangerous the way many of these western interviewers speak.
Talking about whether he thinks Trump can force Russia to stop the war, whether Russia is a threat to Europe & if the US can come between Russia & China…
Rather than allowing the men to speak, as after all, they are the ones with the background knowledge of this situation. Or actually listening & prompting them based on their answers, rather than the agenda.

Lord Karagnov needs to be listened to , not interrupted like this .
This slip of a girl needs to remember this .
I watched the video because of the wise educated professors, not the rude journalist.
At least one of these "wise educated people" is a long-time Putin's advisor, propagandist, author, among the rest, of the article: "There's no choice: Russia must launch a nuclear strike on Europe". He just casually called Europe a "junk yard". But he is not a rude person at all.
@@darkdiatel He did that as a retort to Borrell's "Europe is a garden and outside its walls is a jungle" (I may be paraphrasing slightly), the point being that Europe views itself as a garden, but it viewed as junkyard by the Russians today. Which is a stark change as Russians used to love coming to Europe and always wanted to be "European" and such. It would seem they got rid of their inferiority complex. Furthermore, it also says that - if viewed as junkyard - Russia really has no incentive to conquer (one of a dozen of reasons why this has never been a threat to begin with).
As for Karaganov being Putin's advisor, propagandist, etc. So what? It does not mean that what he is saying is somehow untrue or invalid. He is way more valuable in that capacity because he speaks things that are likely WAY closer to Kremlin's actual thinking than the so-called "Russia experts" that tend to populate all these shows and debates, that always assert "what Putin thinks/wants" but have no effing clue what they are talking about, OR are putting their Russophobic spin of the "Putin is dreaming of restoring the USSR" kind. Here you have a voicing of ACTUAL Russian stance, although, from what I gathered, Karaganov is a bit more on the hawkish side than the Russian government is, especially Putin himself.
@@libertarianbydefault 1) no, he told it as an answer to "Russia is not a threat to Europe?" (No, we are not, we don't need a junkyard)
2) it means he is not an analyst who wants be objective (or even can - he gone too far for that, he will be immediately deemed a traitor by very dangerous people)
@@darkdiatel Right, but you missed the point. Yes, he responded to "Russia is a threat to Europe", but the way he did it is by stating his (and probably otherwise popular view in Russia) that Europe is a junkyard, ergo - Russia does not need it. I mean, why would you want to conquer something that you consider junkyard?
As for objectivity, I think he is. "junkyard" is a strong word and it is obviously not meant in the literal sense, but the point is that Europe is in no way, shape or form "appealing" for conquering: the economy is in recession, inflation rising, standards of living falling, immigration crisis, de-industrialisation, etc. So, why would you want to "own" that?
I think this is a very important point that many disregard entirely: we in Europe are NOT "the coveted prize". We may have been once, a few decades ago, but we have effed-up badly since then: we are destroying ourselves and whatever still remains of the "former glory". We are not that important nor valuable for Russia to try and conquer us. They would not get much for the effort, just one big massive expense and a headache.
@@libertarianbydefault this is not a popular view here about Europe, not at all. On the contrary, we have an idea of quality of life being higher in Europe. Perhaps not uniformly and depending on the specific countries and even regions within the countries (and, well, formally we ourselves are in Europe as far East as until the Ural mountains, but we know what we are talking about), but in general the idea of the Europe is as of richer sobs who are lucky to have better life :D The richer people here travel to Europe to enjoy some of the better sides of life there (again, they pick perhaps specific destinations, and you can argue there are some places they won't want to go to, but it's all relative). Even more richer - prefer to buy and have property there. Including Karaganov himself.
And yes, after saying "junkyard" he added "rather than a garden" and brought up a reference, but it doesn't make his answer any less rude and it's also arrogant.
He knows well enough the situation in Russia too, while we managed to grow economically significantly (it was kind of easy after transitioning to capitalism - the only way was up. Cheap labor force. Very educated population. Lots of oil.) - but we have lots of what can be called real junkyard in our own country still. It's just plain arrogance to call Europe that.
I understand that Europe has lots of problems and might not have benefited from "resting on laurels". But in general the difference in many important things is still too big.

You're all as bad as one another ..Propaganda stooges for Putin ..there is little logic to anything any of you say ...has the USA been 100% behind Ukraine from the start & Europe too ..The Russians would have been busted .. the idea that Russia would start a War of self annihilation with the West is ridiculous but one never knows with madmen ..both he and Trump are megalomaniacs with only a few years left to live ..who knows how they want to go out
i love her voice.
I would rather listen to the experts

Thank you Saudi Arabia for hosting the interview, guests seemed pretty happy. Working on European question in the next interview would be very intreresting for many Europeans.
I have far more interest in whatvthe guests have to say than what the host does, so if she could just refrain from interrupting and talking over them I am sure it would only add value to the broadcast.
Russia has all the cards 😅
Large countries have failed against smaller countries many a time.
Excellent.
True. But larger countries have also prevailed many a time. The most pressing issue here is peace so more people don’t have to die.
Fewer interruptions would be advisable, but it was a very informative session nonetheless.
They may be professors but they're still old men and from experience if you allow an old man to ramble on he can go non stop for hours moving from one story to the next as seamlessly as water flowing down a stream 😂
@@Delinka3D love it.
In 2022 Mearsheimer claimed that Ukraine is bound to fall in a few weeks. This guy is totally compromised, i have no idea how he still gets any screen time.
He is a br 8:04 ainwashed Stalinist.
yeah even before that Mearsheimer In a September 2015 lecture, stated, "If you really want to destroy Russia, you should encourage it to conquer Ukraine. Putin is much too smart to try that." How can he not see his framework of 'realism' is not giving him good predictions.
Mearshimer is an intellectual fraud
UKRAIN LOST IN 3 DAYS...NATO IS DOING THE FIGHT JUST WITH UKRAINIANS MEAT.
Without an American weaponry and technical support!
Absolutely!
I disagree with Scott. If the US attacks Iran, Russia will do something about it. They will back slowly away from Trump - and say: “nah… this is weird… we do not want to discuss Ukraine with you any longer… we’ll just take care of that ourselves… don’t call us any more…”
Excellent questions and equally good answers and analyses. Very informative show! 🎉
Wow so many Russian trolls here . Shocking
Just cos you disagree you claim others are trolls?

?? What does Europe have?
@@yarfadoibrahim8158 Europe has Eastern Europe, which Russia wants back.
@@yarfadoibrahim8158 Anyways, ask russians who have fled to Europe.
@@tereterevanakere2132 Why? Should i also ask the Western Europeans that went to eastern Europe?

is someone payed attention to the map behind John?
- European borders 1913 😊😊😊, where you cannot find “Ukraine” 😂
what's Ukraine?
Ukraine, Finland and Poland weren’t even existed.
@@List11222 Ukraine is a country in Eastern Europe, bordered by Russia to the northeast and east, Belarus to the north, Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary to the west, and Romania and Moldova to the southwest. To the south, it has a coastline along the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov.
The first significant movement for Ukrainian self-rule came with the Khmelnytsky Uprising in 1648 against Polish rule, leading to the establishment of the Cossack Hetmanate, a semi-independent state. However, it soon fell under Russian influence. It was not until the fall of the Soviet Union that many oppressed European states once regained their liberty, and it looked like a 340 year struggle for independence finally was over for Ukraine, until Russia invaded Ukraine again in 2014, when Russia, America and UK utterly ignored the Budapest Memorandum.
Great observation on your part! I dare say it’s very intentional 😊!
@@List11222It's a runaway province of Russia. Yeltsin pushed it out of USSR in order to get a leverage over Gorbachev and get all the power.
The interviewer is very rude and patronising in her approach to the Russian professor. It spoils this interesting interview.
Eliminate Ukraine as a threat? With all the the armour sendt to them they are much stronger now than when the war started. Before the war Ukraine had a lower military budget than Norway with 5,5 million people. Ukraine in itself was never a military threat to Russia. This is utterly nonsense.
_"bUt wHaTaBoUt tHe BiOLaBs WiTh gENeTiCaLLy mOdiFiEd mOsQuiToeS??"_
Your comment is nonsense.
Really
Most of that armor has been destroyed. So by your silly logic, USA has nothing to worry about Iran, or the Houthis right? What about Al Queda? lol Ukraine was gonna attack Donbas, and if Russia allowed that to happen, millions of Ukrainians would have fled across the border to Russia. Why should Russia accept this? Also the US refused to commit to not putting nukes in Ukraine.
who have you been listening to? Ukraine had the largest armed forces in Europe before the war funded and trained by the West.
