'Ukraine Will Be Eliminated' John Mearsheimer and Putin Advisor Discuss US-Russia Relations

  • Published on Apr 8, 2025
  • After two-months in office - President US Donald Trump has ripped up the rule book on international diplomacy and signaled the end of the post-Cold War security system.
    Up for debate on Counterpoints - with me, Melinda Nucifora - how will a recalibrated US-Russia relationship reshape the world order?
    For much of the Biden administration...the US prided itself on leading the diplomatic isolation of Moscow. Enter the self-proclaimed ultimate deal-maker Donald Trump.
    After more than a thousand days of war, the White House has gone from viewing Vladimir Putin as an potential war criminal to a trusted counterpart.
    The tone in Russia has changed too. As ceasefire talks continue, the refrain “nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine” echoes time and time again.
    But as US backing appears to waver, it’s uncertain if Europe is united, or strong enough, to fill that power void.
    The expert panel will discuss:
    How historically significant is this apparent realignment?
    Is Trump’s move away from Europe the beginning of the end for the NATO alliance?
    And if this rapprochement is - in part - a way to split Russia and China?
    Show guests:
    Sergey Karaganov - Russian strategist, Honorary Chairman of the Center for Council for Foreign and Defense Policy and adviser to President Vladimir Putin.
    Prof John Mearsheimer - American political scientist and international relations scholar from the University of Chicago

    The principle of "good neighborliness" (do not be friends against your neighbors, because these are your neighbors who will not disappear anywhere) has not been canceled. We Russians respect this principle. Ukrainians are like children, they don't understand adult principles. Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania behave the same way, and then they will whine and cry. Therefore, we will be friends with China. The Chinese did not abandon us during the sanctions. Such an act is worthy of respect. The actions of Europeans all over the world are not seen as handshaking. There is no respect for the Europeans, they have completely compromised themselves and shown their true colors.

      At least one of these "wise educated people" is a long-time Putin's advisor, propagandist, author, among the rest, of the article: "There's no choice: Russia must launch a nuclear strike on Europe". He just casually called Europe a "junk yard". But he is not a rude person at all.

    • @libertarianbydefault
      @libertarianbydefault 2 days ago

      @@darkdiatel He did that as a retort to Borrell's "Europe is a garden and outside its walls is a jungle" (I may be paraphrasing slightly), the point being that Europe views itself as a garden, but it viewed as junkyard by the Russians today. Which is a stark change as Russians used to love coming to Europe and always wanted to be "European" and such. It would seem they got rid of their inferiority complex. Furthermore, it also says that - if viewed as junkyard - Russia really has no incentive to conquer (one of a dozen of reasons why this has never been a threat to begin with).
      As for Karaganov being Putin's advisor, propagandist, etc. So what? It does not mean that what he is saying is somehow untrue or invalid. He is way more valuable in that capacity because he speaks things that are likely WAY closer to Kremlin's actual thinking than the so-called "Russia experts" that tend to populate all these shows and debates, that always assert "what Putin thinks/wants" but have no effing clue what they are talking about, OR are putting their Russophobic spin of the "Putin is dreaming of restoring the USSR" kind. Here you have a voicing of ACTUAL Russian stance, although, from what I gathered, Karaganov is a bit more on the hawkish side than the Russian government is, especially Putin himself.

      @@darkdiatel Right, but you missed the point. Yes, he responded to "Russia is a threat to Europe", but the way he did it is by stating his (and probably otherwise popular view in Russia) that Europe is a junkyard, ergo - Russia does not need it. I mean, why would you want to conquer something that you consider junkyard?
      As for objectivity, I think he is. "junkyard" is a strong word and it is obviously not meant in the literal sense, but the point is that Europe is in no way, shape or form "appealing" for conquering: the economy is in recession, inflation rising, standards of living falling, immigration crisis, de-industrialisation, etc. So, why would you want to "own" that?
      I think this is a very important point that many disregard entirely: we in Europe are NOT "the coveted prize". We may have been once, a few decades ago, but we have effed-up badly since then: we are destroying ourselves and whatever still remains of the "former glory". We are not that important nor valuable for Russia to try and conquer us. They would not get much for the effort, just one big massive expense and a headache.

    • @darkdiatel
      @darkdiatel Day ago

      @@libertarianbydefault this is not a popular view here about Europe, not at all. On the contrary, we have an idea of quality of life being higher in Europe. Perhaps not uniformly and depending on the specific countries and even regions within the countries (and, well, formally we ourselves are in Europe as far East as until the Ural mountains, but we know what we are talking about), but in general the idea of the Europe is as of richer sobs who are lucky to have better life :D The richer people here travel to Europe to enjoy some of the better sides of life there (again, they pick perhaps specific destinations, and you can argue there are some places they won't want to go to, but it's all relative). Even more richer - prefer to buy and have property there. Including Karaganov himself.
      And yes, after saying "junkyard" he added "rather than a garden" and brought up a reference, but it doesn't make his answer any less rude and it's also arrogant.
      He knows well enough the situation in Russia too, while we managed to grow economically significantly (it was kind of easy after transitioning to capitalism - the only way was up. Cheap labor force. Very educated population. Lots of oil.) - but we have lots of what can be called real junkyard in our own country still. It's just plain arrogance to call Europe that.
      I understand that Europe has lots of problems and might not have benefited from "resting on laurels". But in general the difference in many important things is still too big.

      yeah even before that Mearsheimer In a September 2015 lecture, stated, "If you really want to destroy Russia, you should encourage it to conquer Ukraine. Putin is much too smart to try that." How can he not see his framework of 'realism' is not giving him good predictions.

    I disagree with Scott. If the US attacks Iran, Russia will do something about it. They will back slowly away from Trump - and say: “nah… this is weird… we do not want to discuss Ukraine with you any longer… we’ll just take care of that ourselves… don’t call us any more…”

      @@List11222 Ukraine is a country in Eastern Europe, bordered by Russia to the northeast and east, Belarus to the north, Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary to the west, and Romania and Moldova to the southwest. To the south, it has a coastline along the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov.
      The first significant movement for Ukrainian self-rule came with the Khmelnytsky Uprising in 1648 against Polish rule, leading to the establishment of the Cossack Hetmanate, a semi-independent state. However, it soon fell under Russian influence. It was not until the fall of the Soviet Union that many oppressed European states once regained their liberty, and it looked like a 340 year struggle for independence finally was over for Ukraine, until Russia invaded Ukraine again in 2014, when Russia, America and UK utterly ignored the Budapest Memorandum.

    Eliminate Ukraine as a threat? With all the the armour sendt to them they are much stronger now than when the war started. Before the war Ukraine had a lower military budget than Norway with 5,5 million people. Ukraine in itself was never a military threat to Russia. This is utterly nonsense.

      Most of that armor has been destroyed. So by your silly logic, USA has nothing to worry about Iran, or the Houthis right? What about Al Queda? lol Ukraine was gonna attack Donbas, and if Russia allowed that to happen, millions of Ukrainians would have fled across the border to Russia. Why should Russia accept this? Also the US refused to commit to not putting nukes in Ukraine.
